After conviction the men were
120
taken from the Marine Court to the Gaol, some of them being
handcuffed, and were there placed upon the regulation
prison diet, as prescribed in the enclosed schedule, rations
under Class I being drawn for the first seven days and
under Class II for the remainder of the term.

It will be recollected that at the
time when these men were tried the Baltic Fleet had not
passed Singapore while that of Port Arthur had ceased to
exist and the Harbour of Vladivostock was not open. The
Magistrate was therefore justified in expressing the
opinion that there was no present risk of capture or loss
of life in respect of vessels proceeding with contraband
to Japan.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient
Humble servant,
M. Nathan
Governor,
